Let us start with the answer and explain afterwards. There is no validated instrument that measures whether a relationship will work, and no couple test is an exception, ours included. That does not make them all equivalent: where the numbers come from varies, and it varies a great deal.

What reliable means here

In research, a test is reliable when it returns the same result under the same conditions and has been checked against outside data confirming its predictive value. For couple tests that second half is almost always missing, for a mundane reason: the variable to predict would be the fate of a relationship, and nobody has an objective measure of that.

What you can ask of a test is consistency, transparency about the method, and specificity in the result. Those three are checkable, unlike the science claimed on a homepage.

Where biorhythms come from

The method dates to the late nineteenth century. Wilhelm Fliess, a Berlin physician, described two cycles in 1897, one of 23 days and one of 28. A few years later Hermann Swoboda reached similar conclusions in Vienna, around 1904. In the 1920s Alfred Teltscher added the 33-day intellectual cycle after watching his students' performance. In the 1930s Hans Schwing turned attention to the crossing days, when a curve passes through zero.

It is a long and documented tradition, born at the meeting point of medicine, psychology and statistics, and carried on by real research institutions: the IBRA in 1977, the Society for Research on Biological Rhythms in 1986, the European EBRS in 2005. The study of biological rhythms, chronobiology, is a fully recognised field today.

One distinction has to be made precisely, because this is where the confusion lives: recognised chronobiology and the classic formulation of three fixed cycles of 23, 28 and 33 days are not the same thing. The second is a reading framework, not a clinical instrument, and that is how we present it. The authors, the works and the institutions are collected on our dedicated page.

So why use them

Because the value of a framework is not only its predictive power. A calendar of cycles does something concrete: it gives you a vocabulary and a cadence for noticing something that would otherwise slip past.

Plenty of people find that their energy is not constant, that some days an argument goes worse than it should, that deciding is easy in some weeks and heavy in others. The method puts names and dates on those swings. Whether the cause is genuinely a 23-day cycle or simply the effect of paying closer attention, the conversation that follows is real.

What you should not expect is a forecast. A critical day is not an appointment with bad luck.

How to spot an honest test

Four signals, all checkable in two minutes.

  1. It states its limits. Anyone writing "scientifically proven" about a method that is not has already answered the question about their reliability.
  2. The result is specific. If the text reads the same for you and for anyone else, you are reading a horoscope with a different cover.
  3. It explains where the number comes from. A score with no declared method cannot be checked by anybody.
  4. It asks only for the data it needs. Calculating the cycles takes a birth date. Everything else serves whoever collects it.

What ours does

The couple test on BYOURIT calculates the three classic cycles from the two birth dates, compares them across a 30-day window and returns a score from 0 to 100 plus the detail for each axis. The weighting shifts according to the relationship type you pick.

The first result is free and needs no account, and the same goes for the free BYOURIT reading on a single profile. The interpretations are written by people who know the method rather than generated on the fly. And, as you have just read, we do not present it as science: it is a classic model that offers a mirror, and it is up to you to decide whether you recognise yourself in it.

FAQ

Do biorhythms actually work? It depends what you mean. That the body runs on periodic rhythms is the field of chronobiology, a recognised discipline. The three classic cycles are one reading of that periodicity: a framework for self-observation, not an instrument that predicts your day. Two different levels, worth keeping apart.

Why say this openly if you sell the service? Because criterion number one in this article applies to us too. The history of biorhythms is documented and needs no inflating: telling it as it is holds up better.

How is this different from astrology? Biorhythms are calculated from the birth date alone, with three fixed-length cycles. No signs, no planets, no birth charts. They remain an unvalidated model all the same.

Do I need the time of birth? No, the date is enough.
